Good morning, Billings. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 20th of March.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Jeffrey Zinne, 37, died after falling from the Tripe Chair lift on March 10 at Red Lodge Mountain due to erratic wind gusts — an accident that has led state Sen. Willis Curdy to call for more oversight and to consider reinstating the Passenger Tramway Safety Board — as older lifts do not meet current ANSI standards.  KTVQ
  • Two fatal teen vehicle crashes — one early Tuesday when a Laurel teen died in a rollover on I-90 and another on March 2 near Laurel when a 16-year-old girl died and a passenger was killed while another was injured — have spurred Safe Kids Yellowstone County to launch a driver safety education campaign that will visit Billings Skyview High School next week to stress the importance of buckling up and avoiding distractions.  KTVQ

ECONOMY NEWS

Anglers must report catch details within 48 hours as an online dashboard and FWP contacts will update regulations for different tag areas—further details will soon be available.  KULR8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Senate Judiciary Committee heard House Bill 271 on Monday as Rep. Ed Stafman argued the bill would stop the governor from using executive privilege to withhold records. The bill, which passed the House 56-44 last month, would require a court review of documents — a change meant to ensure open government under the Montana Constitution.  KTVQ
  • Montanans may soon have full insurance coverage for behavioral health screenings if Senate Bill 244 passes in the Legislature. Sen. Mike Yakawich (R Billings) said the measure, approved on a 40 to 8 vote in the Senate last month, is now up for debate in the House.  KTVQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Norway-born skier Fredrik Straume, a sophomore at Rocky Mountain College, said his early start on skis has helped him become one of the fastest alpine racers as his team won national titles last weekend in Oregon—he said he began skiing as a toddler and reached speeds near 100 mph during practice runs.  KTVQ
