  • Billings chief meteorologist Tracy Smith—who began loving weather in 6th grade—reflected on her career and commitment to the community during International Women's History Month. She explained that her background as a military kid led her to study meteorology and, for over 10 years, provide daily forecasts that help keep everyone informed.  KULR8

  • Captain Scurvy's Black Dragon Pub is planned to open on May 9 (2601 Minnesota Avenue downtown) in the former Fieldhouse. The restaurant will offer a themed Medieval dining experience with special fare and events for local diners.  Billings Gazette

  • On Friday, the Women Who Rock Film Festival was held at Art House Cinema and Pub to show inspiring films about local women rock climbers, and the annual Purse, Scarf and Jewelry Sale is open today at West Park Village from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — the Hansel and Gretel Opera will run on Sunday at NOVA Center for the Performing Arts with shows at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. offering tickets from $12 to $22.  KTVQ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Montana loggers and sawmillers say tariffs on Canadian timber and lumber will help keep American sawmills in business when they go into effect on April 2 as the 25% tariff could raise construction costs (adding about 15 cents per board foot). Industry experts say the measures are expected to support domestic manufacturing if housing demand increases.  KTVQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alkali Creek Elementary teacher Christine DeShaw, who once attended the school as a student, was honored by the One Class at a Time program for her commitment to creating a safe learning environment—she received a $500 grant and a $150 gift card from sponsors Western Security Bank, City Brew Coffee and the Education Foundation for Billings Public Schools.  KTVQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Legislators are considering a bill that would provide free school breakfast and lunch to students who qualify for reduced-price meals. Supporters say the measure will help children learn better by addressing food insecurity as grocery prices rise—data shows over 45% of public school students were eligible for these meals last school year.  KTVQ
  • A proposed bill, sponsored by Rep. Lukas Schubert, would shift Montana municipal elections from odd-numbered years to even-numbered years—aligning them with state and federal ballots. If the bill passes, officials elected in 2025 will serve one-year terms before the new cycle begins in 2026.  KTVQ

  • NonStop Local and the Billings Clinic Foundation are supporting the Billings Clinic Kids Fund all month to help families cover costs like rent, gas and motel stays for pediatric care.
