Good morning, Billings. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 24th of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday morning, volunteer cyclists at Phipps Park cleared debris from a rock slide and shifted part of a trail nearly eight feet to improve access — while taking care to disturb as little native vegetation as possible. Local groups Pedal United and Billings NICA led the restoration effort.  KTVQ

CRIME NEWS

  • A hit-and-run incident occurred on March 22 at 8:32 a.m. on Manhattan Drive in Billings, leaving a woman with life-threatening injuries; officers quickly detained three suspects after locating the vehicle, including driver Kiana Spottedhorse (20) who was charged with assault with a weapon while the injured victim was taken to a local hospital and the investigation continued.  KULR8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Billings welcomes a new witchcraft shop across from Billings Skate Park at 14 1/2 S 27th St — owned by Laurie Rogers and her husband, who plan to offer classes and sell supplies for exploring spiritual paths.  KTVQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The USPS announced it would work with the Department of Government Efficiency to reduce operations and cut 10,000 postal jobs nationwide, sparking a protest in Billings. Nearly 50 people — including longtime letter carriers Seana Avent and Rudy Mockel — gathered Sunday morning on King Avenue and 24th Street to express their concern over the potential changes.  KTVQ
  • Billings officials warned that a bipartisan property tax relief bill will cause a $6.5M to $7M revenue shortfall next year and force deep cuts to services such as 24 police officer positions, 18 to 20 fire roles and 20 other city jobs—an issue made worse by a charter that stops tax rate changes. Lawmakers plan to amend the bill by shifting taxes to short-term rentals, second homes and large companies to ease the cuts.  KTVQ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • As spring arrives, Yellowstone County's housing market stays active with homes selling quickly at a median price of $356,900 (about $238 below the national average) and new listings up 396% year-to-date; in February, 134 homes sold. Billie Parrot of the Billings Association of Realtors advised buyers to check their finances before buying.  KULR8
