ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, Colossal Biosciences Inc. created the first dire wolf pups in thousands of years by using gray wolf genes and dire wolf DNA from a tooth, sparking interest among local scientists. ZooMontana curator Allyson Welborn said her shock turned to interest — though she remains cautious about finding proper habitat, while wolf expert Jim Halfpenny sees the technology as a way to help endangered species.  KTVQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montana Department of Transportation advised drivers to follow posted speed limits, allow extra room for changing traffic and avoid phone use in construction zones—Statewide Work Zone Engineer Jeremy Wilde said this advice helps keep everyone safe.  KTVQ
  • The Montana Department of Transportation has committed $1 billion over the next five years to repair or replace 200 bridges as part of an effort to address aging infrastructure. Construction continues on a $6 million project on three key bridges — repairs on the Blue Creek bridge finished last year while rehabilitation at the North Avenue Canal bridge in Huntley and another in Joliet is underway.  KTVQ
  • House Bill 848, which would have moved $2 million from the railroad car tax to the Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority, failed 23—27 on its second reading in the Montana Senate on Wednesday. Lawmakers postponed the measure indefinitely after lobbyists argued it would unfairly shift costs and interfere with freight service.  KTVQ

  • RiverStone Health Public Health is offering free soil testing for lead ahead of spring planting — its staff will answer questions to help prevent lead poisoning.  Billings Gazette
  • A $1.5M grant is giving nurses in Billings and across Montana extra training to handle sexual assault exams—Billings Clinic will add nine forensic nurses and fund new training sites in St. Ignatius, Glasgow and Lewistown so victims can get help near home. The training teaches both technical skills and ways to offer emotional support.  KULR8
