COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Billings Parks and Rec held its annual Arbor Day ceremony at South Park on Thursday, where community members planted a new oak tree in the spot that had lost an old ash tree last year - over 400 fourth-grade students took part in hands-on environmental learning activities.  KTVQ
  • Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and The Base Camp will host a free bear safety workshop in Billings on May 15 at The Base Camp (1730 Grand Ave.) from 5:30 to 7 p.m., where outdoor enthusiasts will learn bear biology, safety practices, and how to use inert bear spray with a chance to win their own. The event is part of efforts to help residents prevent dangerous bear encounters.  KULR8

CRIME NEWS

  • After officers responded on April 18 to a call on Wyoming Avenue that was first thought to be an overdose, they arrested 44-year-old Jesse Strack—originally charged with attempted homicide—and later updated his charge to deliberate homicide after the assault victim died on April 24 from injuries sustained in the attack.  KULR8
  • Megan Elizabeth McClave Strack died April 24 at a Billings hospital after alleged spousal abuse—Jesse Jon Strack has been in custody for two weeks.  Billings Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Billings and Lockwood high school students watched firefighters and EMTs perform a crash rescue simulation at the Career Center on Thursday as responders extricated a dummy from a car and moved it to a Life Flight helicopter. The demonstration gave students a clear look at possible careers in emergency services.  KTVQ
  • Lockwood Primary teacher Kennedy Juranek was honored by the One Class at a Time program for building strong bonds with her second grade students—she received a $500 grant from the Education Foundation and a $150 gift card from City Brew Coffee.  KTVQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montana Department of Transportation is asking for community input on an 11-mile I-90 resurfacing project near Wyola that will include crack and chip sealing, pavement marking, and bridge repairs at the Wyola and Aberdeen Interchange bridges with work set for 2028 if funding allows—comments may be sent online or by mail to the MDT Billings office. Drivers will face median crossover detours and a 16-foot width limit.  KULR8
