Good morning, Billings. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 14th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Billings parents Darrell and Kristi Vavrosky launched the Live Like Jace Foundation to honor their son who died last year from aggressive melanoma, with his diagnosis coming six weeks before his death. The foundation will hold a silent auction Saturday at Henry’s Garage — on Garden Avenue — to help pay for outdoor opportunities for those in need.  KTVQ
  • Former major league player Brett Butler served as the keynote speaker at Tuesday's Community Prayer Breakfast at the Northern Hotel (he discussed his baseball career, life challenges, and his work guiding young players) in Billings.  KTVQ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Montana was recognized as one of the top states for starting a business by Entrepreneur Media after a record number of new companies were registered by April—this achievement includes an opportunity score of 9.55 and highlights the strong local support in Billings. Keith Hart from Big Sky Economic Development said that local entrepreneurs benefit from operating in a smaller market with less competition.  KULR8
  • Today, the Billings Gazette signed a letter of intent to sell its building (401 N. Broadway) to Stockman Bank, which plans to keep the historic look for its insurance wing and warehouse. The paper will print in Bozeman while most staff work remotely as it searches for a new office.  Billings Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • The Yellowstone County Sheriff's Office investigated a weekend house fire at Meadowlark Trailer Park that turned into a homicide case after a man was found dead and Justin Hosey was arrested on charges including arson and tampering—while Billings police also probed a Friday night shooting at a Town Pump following a car meetup that escalated to gunfire and property damage. A U.S. District Court judge later ruled that Anderson Towing would return to the city rotation after the company was removed in November over overcharging concerns.  KTVQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montana’s congressional delegation — led by Sen. Steve Daines and joined by legislators from Idaho and Wyoming — asked federal authorities to reverse a Fish and Wildlife Service decision that would treat grizzly bears as one group across several states. They said Montana’s rules already protect over 2,000 bears that are part of a larger, healthy population reaching from Canada to Alaska.  KTVQ
  • Two weeks after the Legislature ended, Governor Gianforte vetoed six bills and has 208 bills on his desk that could change Montana’s budget—lawmakers said he may reject proposals seen as too costly. Lawmakers noted some proposals might add millions in spending for health services and weed funding that could affect future state finances.  KTVQ
  • The Montana Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Task Force is working to improve responses as tribal representatives, law enforcement & state officials join efforts because 76.3% of missing Indigenous persons were 17 or younger. The initiative includes search & rescue training in Great Falls last September and support from the FBI via Operation Not Forgotten.  KULR8
