COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montana Rescue Mission opened its second campus Monday with a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m.—the new facility brings a range of services including a culinary academy, salon, auto shop, wood shop, child care center and computer lab under one roof. Executive director Matt Lundgren said the campus was designed to reduce barriers and help people move toward long-term recovery using the train as a symbol for the journey.  KTVQ

CRIME NEWS

  • Residents in Laurel are on high alert after 38 car break-ins since Thursday — four of which involved stolen guns — as police work to identify the juvenile suspects seen on surveillance.  KTVQ
  • A Billings woman who pleaded guilty to trafficking fentanyl and using a firearm was sentenced yesterday to 11 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release after investigators linked her bank deposits of over $230,000 and electronic payments to her drug trafficking, which included shooting two men and leaving one paraplegic.  KULR8
  • A Billings woman pleaded not guilty Tuesday to felony charges of assault with a weapon — criminal endangerment and obstructing a peace officer after she allegedly pointed a pink handgun at a family and conducted a two-hour rooftop standoff with police on the West End.  KTVQ
  • Keith Breckenridge, 51, was fatally stabbed in a Billings alley near Adams and Roosevelt last Friday night, prompting family and friends to mourn his loss while a local family was threatened with a gun on Saturday—Ben Steele Middle School also won first place in a worldwide vocabulary competition, with teacher Mariko Trudell saying the contest prepares students for future success.  KTVQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The EPA awarded $8 million in grants to seven recipients in Montana to assess, clean up, and revitalize local lands, addressing issues like asbestos and lead contamination. $2 million went to the Montana Department of Environmental Quality for environmental assessments at vacant properties in Anaconda, Billings, and Libby, and another $2 million was allocated to Harlowton to clean up a contaminated railyard—part of a larger $267 million allocation in Brownfields grants.  KULR8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new Montana law signed by Governor Greg Gianforte last week raises the fee for nonresident hunting licenses from $15 to $50 to fund public hunter access programs—80% of the revenue will go to block management payments for landowners. The law takes effect on October 1 and is expected to generate about $2.9 million in new state revenue each year.  KTVQ
  • Billings city officials taught local citizens what it takes to run a campaign in a free Candidate School hosted Tuesday morning by the Billings Chamber of Commerce—attendees learned about campaign rules, tracking expenses, and steps to run for office before filing week begins on May 27.  KTVQ
