A house on Cactus Drive in midtown burned on Thursday night, causing a strong smoky smell and a power outage until about 10:30 p.m., while neighbors rushed outside with a garden hose (and a camper trailer was beyond repair) as fire crews worked to stop the flames and officials began investigating the cause.

A Billings man, Loren Cody Smoker, was convicted Friday of fatally shooting a driver in a West End drive-by that followed a fight last summer—he now awaits sentencing and could face life in prison.

Tipped workers in Montana have paid state taxes on their tips since last year after Senate Bill 399 tied the state’s taxable income to the federal system—ending the previous exemption.

If Congress approves a federal bill that exempts tips for workers earning under $160,000, Montana will revert to its old policy, which in 2023 would have produced about $6.5 million in revenue if applied.
