Crow tribal members are marking 200 years since the treaty signed on August 4, 1825 by hosting the Spirit of the Crow Warrior Gathering this week on federally owned public land, lighting the night sky with illuminated tipis.
The event comes just before Crow Fair — which draws 20,000 visitors and includes Crow Native Days with cultural events starting June 23.
Evan Cass, a student at St. Francis Catholic School, became the first Billings student to qualify for the Optimist International World Oratorical Championships after winning a regional contest in Red Deer, Alberta — he earned a $2,500 scholarship.
He will compete in international finals on July 17 in St. Louis where he may win up to $15,000 in additional scholarship money.
Billings Public School District 2 announced that its benchmark scores for kindergarten through eighth grade show math proficiency at 64% and reading at 61%—with Meadowlark and Rose Park schools gaining while Riverside Middle dropped 3%.
Superintendent Dr. Garcia said the district will expand food and clothing programs—along with extending its Kinder Ready program—to help students in impoverished areas.
