BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new hotel will replace the historic Rockman Building in downtown Billings as A&E Design approved demolition and plans for the seven-story AC Hotel, which is set to include a rooftop tavern with views—expected to boost local tourism and job opportunities. Construction will finish by summer and residents are watching the project with anticipation.  KULR8

CRIME NEWS

  • At 12:38 a.m. on Friday, police arrested a suspect after a 21-year-old male was stabbed multiple times at Olympic Village Apartments.  Billings Gazette
  • Tama LaRay Donley was arraigned Friday in Yellowstone County District Court via video from South Dakota after she allegedly removed her 76+year-old mother from a Billings care facility on June 1; she pleaded not guilty to felony custodial interference and remains free on a $15,000 bond.  KTVQ
  • Billings Police responded early Friday morning to a stabbing at 3811 Slalom Dr where they found a 21-year-old male with multiple stab wounds who received medical care on scene before being transported to a local hospital, and they later arrested 20-year-old Thomas Tobacco—he now faces charges of Assault with a Weapon and Partner or Family Member Assault.  KULR8

CULTURE NEWS

  • This summer weekend sees festivals across the region, with the Red Lodge Festival of Nations Tribute celebrating its 75th anniversary from today until Sunday and Sweet Grass Fest in Big Timber hosting rodeo and community events from Friday to Saturday—both drawing visitors for unique cultural experiences. In Billings, families will enjoy a free Summer Bash at Centennial Park on Sunday and live music along with interactive activities at Symphony in the Park at Pioneer Park.  KTVQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yellowstone County commissioners have begun selecting a replacement for Commissioner John Ostlund, who died in a plane crash south of Billings and will be honored in a public service on July 12—while no injuries were reported after an explosion at a Sidney saltwater disposal site where residents felt the boom from 10 miles away. In addition, Billings motorcyclist Kenneth 'Griz' Taylor—who suffered a heart attack on April 10—is back on the road after fellow riders quickly recognized his distress.  KTVQ
  • Former Montana Congressman Pat Williams died at 87, his family announced Wednesday evening—he served 18 years in Congress and later returned to Missoula to teach at the University of Montana. He helped build education programs, including work with the President’s Commission for Tribal Colleges and the Montana University System.  KTVQ
  • Yellowstone County is searching for a new leader following the loss of John Ostlund. Commissioners will choose his replacement from candidates picked by the county’s GOP central committee — applications close at 5 p.m. on July 14.  Billings Gazette
