COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Veterans Navigation Network is working to support Native veterans across Montana by offering resource navigation and peer mentorship, led by executive director Blake and Warrior Bridge program head Eddie Foote Jr. They will host a Veterans Resource Fair on the Crow Reservation with 19 vendors and a listening session in Billings for Native women veterans—efforts aimed at filling gaps in support on reservations and urban areas.  KULR8

CRIME NEWS

  • Billings police are investigating reports that former Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch employee John W Whiteside (who worked there from April to May) sexually assaulted residents after a girl told a ranch therapist about unwanted touching and threats to keep quiet, and he now faces multiple sexual assault charges.  KULR8
  • Billings police identified Sage Francisco Spang as a person of interest in a possible homicide investigation stemming from a shooting on July 23 and asked anyone with information to call the non-emergency dispatch at (406-657-8200) or Detective M. Johnson at (406-869-3927).  KTVQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The USS Helena ended its service on July 25th after 38 years when a decommissioning ceremony was held at the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport, Wash. Montana lawmakers praised the submarine's legacy and the crew for their dedication to national defense.  KTVQ
  • The Yellowstone County Commission has appointed Chris White to serve in Ostlund’s place as a county representative.  Billings Gazette
  • Yellowstone County has appointed Chris White—an Albertsons manager recommended by the Yellowstone Central Committee—as new commissioner for District One after longtime Commissioner John Ostlund died in a plane crash earlier this summer, and his term will last until the end of 2026 pending a formal swearing-in.  KULR8
  • Construction started in downtown Billings on the Two-Way Restoration Project that will convert several one-way streets into two-way roads and install new pavement markings + traffic signals to boost business visibility and walkability. Montana Avenue, 1st Avenue North, 4th Avenue North and 6th Avenue North will remain one-way while North 31st and 3rd Avenue North get new bicycle tracks, with final road work scheduled for mid-August.  KULR8
