- ➤ On August 9, a severely injured hiker was rescued from Scraggy Mountain when several police, fire, and National Guard teams—including Phillips County’s new deputy—responded to a 911 call and later used a Black Hawk helicopter to lift him off the mountain for transport to a hospital in Billings. - ➤ Billings man Loren Cody Smoker, 25, was sentenced Friday by Yellowstone County District Court Judge Ashley Harada to a 75-year prison term—70 years for deliberate homicide and 5 years for evidence tampering—and ordered to pay $23,777.65 in restitution—penalty set by the court—for fatally shooting 27-year-old Dennis Fabian Rolon during a drug deal fight on June 23rd. - ➤ State leaders are considering Billings—specifically a site near High Sierra Dog Park in the Heights—as the location for a new mental hospital funded by a $26.5 million approval to ease crowding at Warm Springs. - ➤ On Monday, Gov. Gianforte signed an executive order to launch 406 Jobs, a plan that merges the state’s workforce programs into four work pathways—career and apprenticeships, college, entrepreneurship and the military—with a focus on expanding job opportunities.
