  • Warrior Wishes Montana—an organization supporting veterans and first responders—will host a fundraiser at 105 Brewing in Billings Heights this Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; the event will feature live music, a silent auction, cornhole, and a dunk tank with every drink purchase donating $1 toward assisted veterans.  KULR8

CRIME NEWS

  • Loren Smoker was sentenced to 75 years in prison on August 8 for fatally shooting 27-year-old Dennis Rolon at Central Avenue and Shiloh Road—courts convicted him of deliberate homicide and tampering with evidence.  KULR8
  • Billings Police Department chased a suspected stolen vehicle Tuesday evening from Terry Avenue to King Avenue East—one officer fired his gun during the miles-long pursuit.  Billings Gazette

  • After nine months of layoffs at Stillwater Mine—over 700 Montana families still wait for answers as they hope proposed tariffs on Russian palladium will restore jobs, Christina Holcomb said her family is struggling after her husband lost his mine job and now works long hours while she works full-time to cover their needs.  KTVQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Billings school custodians have been deep cleaning classrooms and hallways all summer and are speeding up repairs before school starts—a mid-June schedule change has pushed them to work even harder to finish on time. Their teamwork keeps every facility ready for students when classes begin.  KTVQ
  • Billings nonprofit Tumbleweed is giving over 300 backpacks and school supplies to homeless students to help them return to school. Billings Public Schools is collaborating with Tumbleweed — which also offers haircuts, meals, and clothing—to connect students with the support they need.  KTVQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Officials and advocates met Tuesday in Billings at the Hilton Garden Inn during the Opioid Overdose Prevention Summit—where data showed Montana had 774 fatal overdoses from 2020 to 2024, peaking at 178 in 2022—before falling to 165 in 2023. They also discussed new tracking methods along major highways to help stop more fentanyl deaths.  Billings Gazette
