ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Montana Army National Guardsmen rescued three hikers suffering from hypothermia in the Princess Lake area of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness last Sunday when a HH60M Blackhawk medical evacuation helicopter took off from Billings + the crew transported them to Columbus for treatment before returning by 9:20 a.m.  KTVQ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Rusty Closet, a vintage thrift store that opened in May, will host local vendors selling goods like jewelry, clothing, and coffee starting Saturday, Aug. 23 at Grand Avenue and 12th Street West near Albertsons—supporting local entrepreneurship.  KTVQ
  • Shane Flowers, owner of Ranch House Meat Co, was named President of the American Association of Meat Processors—the top meat group in North America—which makes him the first Montanan in the role. He will use his year-long position to help new processors learn and grow by sharing his business experience.  Billings Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission updated wolf hunting and trapping rules to allow a statewide take of up to 458 wolves and raised tag limits to 15 for each method (letting one person take up to 30 wolves). The changes also set a specific quota of 60 wolves for Region 3 and require hunters to bring unwanted skulls and pelts to Wildlife for proper use or disposal (a move designed to tighten oversight).  KTVQ
  • Yellowstone County commissioners proposed to cut the Yellowstone Art Museum's county funding from $220,000 to $50,000 for fiscal year 2026, a 77% decrease that reduces its share from 25% to about 6%. A public hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. on August 26 and a final vote is expected in early September—museum leaders warn the cuts will force changes in maintenance and operations.  KTVQ
  • Gov. Gianforte announced that planning for a new state mental hospital was paused after public pushback and challenges with local rules and costs, and the state did not set a timeline for restarting the project. A daughter remembered Nancy Kelley—one of four victims from the Owl Bar shooting in Anaconda—and the Billings City Council will meet in September to review plans for a public art committee.  KTVQ
