Good morning, Billings. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 23rd of September.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter reported on Facebook that its facility became uninhabitable after a drug incineration mishap left 14 employees sick — forcing operations to shift to an education office on Grand Avenue. Lillian Ross spoke at an Out of the Darkness Walk on Sunday to honor lives lost to suicide, and a local nonprofit hosted a run to raise money for sex trafficking survivors. KTVQ
- ➤ Mary Sickle is head cook and Meals on Wheels coordinator at Laurel Senior Citizens center and has prepared nearly one million meals over 40 years. She earned the Living Legacy Award this month and will keep serving local seniors (her work touches many lives). KTVQ
- ➤ Montana Rescue Mission has ended the employment of operations coordinator Tito Albarran and program director Vanessa Bond amid an ongoing internal investigation. Board member Eric Peterson said the board will launch a national search for a new executive director while Max French now manages day-to-day operations for the nonprofit and its affiliated organizations. - ➤ After the Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter closed on Sept. 10 due to an incinerator malfunction, local veterinary clinics have reported limited space for stray animals while the police urge the public not to bring them to their clinics — leaving Billings without a clear solution until the shelter reopens. Officials are working with restoration teams to clean the building, though a reopening date has not been set. KTVQ
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A federal report obtained by MTN raised new questions about the June 2023 train derailment near Reed Point that sent 10 rail cars into the Yellowstone River by showing the century-old bridge was sound and diver checks ruled out scour—while a broken rail 350 feet from the collapse was deemed unlikely to have caused it—leaving local groups worried about ongoing river damage. Gianforte created the Unleashing American-Made Energy Task Force to study Montana's growing energy needs and held its first meeting in Helena on Sept. 22—gathering state agency leaders, lawmakers and energy industry experts to plan next steps.
