COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday, community members gathered in downtown Billings for a Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons vigil as they lined up to smudge during an opening prayer—honoring indigenous traditions and demanding justice.  Billings Gazette

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Montana DOT and airport officials told Lem Robinson to remove the memorial he built along Highway 3 to honor his daughter Savanah—who died in a motorcycle crash—as he must complete the removal by Oct. 17.  KTVQ
  • Cody Boehm was injured when a boulder struck him during a climbing trip near Red Lodge Sunday afternoon, breaking his collarbone, seven ribs, and causing a back laceration. A friend called for help while rescue teams + sawyers worked together in tough terrain to free him, and his helmet prevented a fatal head injury.  KTVQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hundreds of families gather today at the Montana Pavilion at MetraPark to support Billings Public Schools during Saturday Live—an annual fundraiser hosted by the Billings Education Foundation that runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The 33rd-year event aims to boost funds for classroom supplies and teacher programs, with hopes to exceed last year's $63,000 raise.  KTVQ
  • Poly Drive Elementary teacher Mrs. Murphy was honored by the One Class at a Time program—sponsored by the Education Foundation for Billings Public Schools, Western Security Bank, and City Brew Coffee—for her engaging music class. She received a $500 grant and a $150 gift card to support her work in inspiring students to learn music and reading rhythms.  KTVQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • City officials announced that Billings is updating its longtime Recycle and Reforest program to reduce recycling contamination by modifying bins to accept more cans and adding special shoots to keep out trash. Residents should drop off only clean, unbagged cans and newspapers at Stewart Park, Veterans Park, and Clevenger Park — a change intended to ensure the program's continued success.  KTVQ
  • Wildfire smoke from fires in Washington, Oregon, and western Montana is moving into Billings and nearby counties and may reduce air quality and visibility through Saturday—residents sensitive to smoke are advised to limit outdoor activities.  KTVQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Greg Gianforte signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Taiwan Flour Millers Association to strengthen trade with Taiwan—boosting Montana's agricultural exports. The agreement commits Taiwan to purchase 3.6 million metric tons of Montana wheat, valued at $1.3 billion, from 2026 until 2029.  KULR8
  • Billings Public Works is asking residents to share ideas for safer streets, better routes, and a more connected community in its Transportation Corridor Plan—residents can offer feedback online or at events—such as Saturday Live and the Harvest Festival.  KULR8
  • On September 12, the Blackfeet Tribal Council banned kratom sales—aiming to prevent opioid-like addiction and protect local youth. Tribal officials will work with law enforcement and the courts to design enforcement measures for the new rule.  Billings Gazette

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Udo and Angi Lyngby-Cox have run Mule Train Alpacas northwest of Billings since 2016—raising 120 alpacas along with other animals at their family-operated ranch. They breed alpacas for soft fiber and offer tours and events—including a vendor spot at a fall festival on Oct. 4—to support the ranch.  KTVQ
