- ➤ Marian Lyman presented the Montana Moth Project on Friday, Oct 3rd at ZooMontana's Community Room where she explained how moths help nature—today the Billings Fire Department opens its station at Fire State 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. while the All Hallows Medieval Fantasy Faire runs from 10 a.m. today to 6 p.m. and continues Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to raise funds for North Park improvements. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Sept. 15, the Montana Family Foundation sent a letter to school districts warning that allowing biological males in female restrooms, locker rooms, and changing areas would break federal law and deny girls equal access to education. Derek Oestreicher, the foundation’s chief legal counsel, said Title IX should keep these spaces separate—ensuring future policies protect female students. KTVQ
- ➤ Medical students at Rocky Vista University Montana College of Osteopathic Medicine volunteered Monday evening with Eagle Mount in Billings from 5 to 7 p.m.—nearly 30 students ran activity stations offering adaptive games and hands-on medical demonstrations that helped them gain real-world experience with disability-inclusive care. - ➤ Billings Public Schools' Education Foundation partnered with Western Security Bank and City Brew Coffee to honor Rose Park Elementary teacher Meredyth Johnson in the One Class at a Time program—she received a $500 grant and a $150 gift card to support her work with fourth-grade students. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The DEQ has proposed a maximum fine for CHS after the refinery failed 32 out of 44 wastewater toxicity tests from June 2021 to January 2025, which detected toxic discharges into the Yellowstone River. The proposed penalty—aimed at ensuring compliance with environmental standards—will hold CHS accountable for its pollution. Billings Gazette

HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Montana’s Clean Indoor Air Act, passed in 2005 to ban smoking and later updated to include marijuana and e-cigarettes, has helped lower lung cancer cases and deaths—from 60 to 44 and 47 to 27 per 100,000, respectively. The Department of Public Health and Human Services says these improvements show the law’s positive impact on public health. KULR8
- ➤ Health experts in Montana are urging Billings residents to get their flu vaccine this October as flu cases typically rise in November—last season more than 15,000 cases led to 1,000 hospitalizations and 68 deaths. KULR8
