- ➤ The Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter will not return to the city-owned facility on Monad Road after a Sept. 10 drug incineration incident exposed 14 employees and raised safety concerns. Executive Director Triniti Halverson said the board permanently severed ties with the building due to lingering contamination issues — the shelter now works in a temporary warehouse and plans to break ground on a new facility by spring 2026. - ➤ A train accident in Columbus on Sunday morning killed a BNSF conductor after he was struck by a train — causing road closures and a lengthy investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. In Billings, over 2,500 people joined a nationwide 'No Kings' protest while the local fire department honored two teenage girls and six firefighters with Citizen Service Medals for brave rescues. - ➤ NorthWestern Energy and Black Hills Corp filed a joint merger application with the Montana Public Service Commission in Butte to combine their strengths for safe and affordable energy service — Brian Bird will lead the new company and customers in Montana will not see changes in rates. The merger must get approval from several state and federal bodies and is expected to finish by late 2026 or early 2027. KULR8

- ➤ Gas prices in Montana dropped 0.9¢ per gallon last week as the average price fell to $3.06 on Oct. 20 (prices were 8.9¢ higher a month ago and 12.5¢ higher a year ago). KTVQ

- ➤ MSUB reported its largest freshman class since 2019 while total fall enrollment reached the highest level in five years (officials noted enrollment remained relatively stable). Billings Gazette
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Montana DEQ released a draft guidance on October 1 to help state agencies measure greenhouse gas emissions from projects and is asking for public comments until October 30. The 25-page document, made under Senate Bill 221, sets public listening sessions at the Billings Hotel and Convention Center, the University Center in Missoula, and the Delta Hotel Helena Colonial—critics say it does not clearly tie emissions to local harms. - ➤ Governor Greg Gianforte announced he will lead a trade mission to South Korea and Japan from October 19 to October 25 to boost Montana’s agricultural, manufacturing, photonics and bioscience industries — he will meet with federal officials and partners to strengthen economic ties with these key trading nations. - ➤ Billings Fire Department honored several local heroes this past Saturday for their quick acts during emergencies. Captain Meeker, Engineer Strain and Firefighter Letendre received the Medal of Valor for their brave work during a structure fire — Engineer Ellis and Firefighter Vandersloot earned the Life Saving Medal for rapid help during a twin delivery — and Sadie Debusk with Hallelujah McPherson received the Life Saving Award for quick action at Lake Elmo.
