COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Monday, wind gusts toppled trees and left 1,000 residents without power as crews worked to clear roads and secure lines — Laurel City Council discussed state plans for a $26.5 million mental health facility and Billings Public Schools will buy the former bank to expand healthcare programs.  KTVQ
  • Billings residents can help four in-need families through KTVQ’s Adopt a Family holiday program by donating items, including winter coats (and big-ticket gifts) at downtown KTVQ or Kirkness Roofing on Moore Lane until Friday, Dec. 12, with families set to pick up their presents the week before Christmas.  KTVQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An anonymous worker reported that mail at the Billings post office at 841 S. 26th St was exposed to harsh weather in an uncovered lot and with poor conditions, and management began moving mail onto carts Saturday — promising continued efforts to improve safety.  KTVQ
  • Congressman Troy Downing supported the Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act today; his vote extends the program through Fiscal Year 2026 and provides lapsed payments for 2024 and 2025 to help local counties fund their schools. He emphasized the act’s role in boosting Montana’s education system.  KULR8
  • Montana Highway Patrol is increasing DUI patrols for National DUI Prevention Month as holiday travel begins — Sergeant Phil Smart advises locals to plan ahead by using ride-share apps or staying put, noting that 40% of Montana’s fatal crashes involve alcohol with 64 fatalities recorded this year.  KULR8

  • Montana State will host Stephen F. Austin Friday night while Montana meets South Dakota Saturday afternoon in the FCS quarterfinals. The teams could face each other in a semifinal matchup if both win their contests (potentially Dec. 20).  KTVQ
  • Lockwood High School senior Anthony King-Burgee (a 4.2 GPA student) will play in the Native All-American Game at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on December 14. He is one of 70 elite Native American players selected to showcase their athletic and academic achievements, representing both his tribe and community.  KULR8
