Good morning, Billings. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 28th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A fire hydrant erupted last night on the 3500 block of Cook Avenue in Billings, flooding the street and forcing neighbors to manage water damage. Residents say the flooding is linked to an old road dip—road modifications that created a persistent water trap—and they hope the city will regrade the street after Memorial Day.  KULR8
  • Andrew Konkel is the new president and CEO of United Way of Yellowstone County. He brings strong experience from his work with United Way organizations in the South and Midwest.  Billings Gazette
  • Billings residents along Cook Avenue found their yards flooded on Monday after a fire hydrant leak spilled water onto driveways and into some garages, though no homes were damaged. Miles City pool closures will continue this summer to save $70,000 as services face cuts and the splash pad is set to reopen May 30—nearly 400 people also gathered across Yellowstone County at Memorial Day ceremonies to honor fallen service members.  KTVQ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Memorial Day, Montana began its 100 deadliest days of summer—when distracted driving, speeding and drunk driving increased road risks—and authorities reported 60 fatalities statewide and 24 in one district while urging motorists to wear seatbelts.  KULR8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Billings students from eight schools competed today in the regional championship of The Amazing Shake where role models taught professional skills as participants shared their achievements in a TV-style interview.  KULR8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montana lawmakers introduced 42 agriculture bills during the session, including House Bill 390 that would allow farmers to repair their own equipment but did not pass; Montana farmers, led by the Montana Farmers Union, plan to seek federal support for change in future sessions—optimism remains for another run.  KULR8
  • Billings experienced five water main breaks over Memorial Day weekend at spots including Gabel Road, 30th, 4th and 13th, and the 3500 block of Cook Avenue—causing flooding, water outages and some road closures. Public Works Director Debi Meling said high water use from sprinklers stressed older pipes, and repairs are underway with little effect on water bills.  KULR8

HEALTH NEWS

  • Yellowstone Valley 'Out of the Darkness Walk to Prevent Suicide' will hold two fundraisers for suicide prevention this week, one at Five on Black on May 29 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. (with 50% of proceeds donated) and another at Thirsty Street Brewing Company from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. where each drink adds $1 to the cause; a garage sale will run at the United Way Building on Overland Avenue on June 6 and 7 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  KULR8
